Memoirs of the Soul (Memoir Writing)

Writing memoirs from the soul requires us to move beyond the linear events that took place in our lives. It requires our investigation into our thoughts and feelings. It requires us to ask ourselves when we were filled with love, longing, satisfaction, grief, and disappointment. In this class, we will produce a written account of our personal histories and perhaps discover a little something about ourselves. Students should purchase & bring to class the book: Memoirs of the Soul: A Writing Guide by Nan Merrick Phifer. You can order it from your favorite online bookseller.

EVERY PICTURE TELLS A STORY

Photo albums hold more than pictures; they are storehouses for memories. From faded sepia-tone portraits of nearly-forgotten ancestors, to digital shots taken yesterday and posted on Facebook, the photographs we treasure the most are precious because of the stories they tell. Inspired by the photos that have meaning for us, we will write about those people, places and things that have comprised the mosaic of our lives. By the end of the course, we will have created a mini-album of, not just photos, but the funny, poignant and wonderful stories behind. Pen and paper, or laptop or tablet, are required for writing. This class will have in-class writing, reading, and discussion resulting from the writing.
