Writer's Workshop (Hybrid)
Course Description: This workshop offers writers a chance to create and share first-person or fictional pieces. Writers have a chance to read their work aloud in a supportive communal setting. We offer constructive, helpful criticism, and suggestions how to improve each piece. It has been shown that many writers learn more from workshop discussion of each others' pieces than in a formal creative writing class setting. Each week, two students submit a piece to class members for discussion and questions. Additionally, the instructor offers suggestions regarding common writing issues including confronting writer’s block; bringing characters to life; and editing one’s own work. In the past, several students have continued to critique each others' work after the class finished.
Recommended Text: Creative Writer’s Handbook, 3rd edition by Jason and Lefcowitz, which can be purchased online for approximately $4. (Recent edition is about $90 and is mostly the same.)
