Course description: Select symphonies are evaluated within the broader framework of the Classical legacy (esp. of Mozart and Beethoven), as well as recent 19th-century trends. The symphonies are presented in videos of live performances.   

Week 1  

Schubert: emerging from the impact of Mozart and Beethoven. “Unfinished Symphony”

Week 2

Schubert: Symphony no. 9 (The “Great”)

Week 3

Mendelssohn: from early string symphonies to the “Scottish” and “Italian” symphonies

Week 4

Berlioz: “Symphony Fantastique” and the problematics of “program” music

Week 5

Liszt: the symphonic poem; excerpts from his works

Week 6 

Brahms: the Third and Fourth Symphonies
