Course Description:

In the early 1970s, Folk music was slowly declining in popularity and rock fans were drawn to artists who wrote and performed their own material.  This course will explore four of the most dynamic singers/songwriters of the decade where Rock became a major industry.  The careers, music and extraordinary talents (Carole King, Elton John, James Taylor, Joni Mitchell and more) of these artists will be explored.

Week 1 Introduction of Folk/Folk Rock; Fragmentation of Rock, Bob Dylan (1960’s contribution).

Week 2 Music and career of Joni Mitchell; Music and career of James Taylor.

Week 3 Music and career of James Taylor, continued; Music and career of Carole King.

Week 4 Music and career of Carole King, continued; Music and career of Elton John.

Week 5 Music and career of Elton John, continued; Music and career of Crosby Stills Nash and Young.

Week 6 Honorable mentions: Jim Croce, Cat Stevens, Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel; Course recap: Legacy, Current trends.
