Intellectual Property Law Concentration - Paralegal Certificate

Intellectual property in need of protection takes many different forms, and crosses over into a multitude of sectors. Intellectual property law provides the basis for protection of intangible assets. The scope of possible protection includes musical, literary, and artistic works, inventions, words, phrases, and designs. These protection rights fall into the categories of patents, trade secrets, copyrights, and/or trademarks. The policy behind intellectual property law protections is to incentivize the creation of works that benefit society. When protected intellectual property is used in an unauthorized manner, the potential exists to seek relief for infringement. Understanding the distinctions between areas of intellectual property law, including underlying policies, fundamental principles of bodies of law, and interrelation between laws, is integral to work in the intellectual property law field. Parameters associated with patent, trade secret, trademark, or copyright maintenance, licensure agreements, and compliance are core areas of learning focus. The intellectual property law scope of coverage, connected with application based enhanced legal research and writing skills, provides a competitive advantage for paralegals in this area of law.
