This Medical Office Administration Certificate program will provide learners with an academic skill set and a foundation for providing care and comfort in a supporting role in a healthcare setting. In this MOA Certificate program, learners are taught a wide variety of administrative skills aimed to prepare for working among doctors and nurses in a medical office setting.
The Medical Office Administration Certificate program at the University of Miami is uniquely designed to prepare learners to sit for a certification examination which has two options available for interested learners can choose from.
a) the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) offers a certification examination for Medical Office Assistants (NCMOA)
b) the National Healthcareer Association (NHA) offers a certification examination for Certified Medical Administrative Assistants (CMAA).
This MOA Certificate program will prepare learners for both examinations. Note: The NCMOA and the CMAA certification examinations are not included in this MOA Certificate program. Learners can pursue such certifications independently should they desire to do so.
Program Outcomes
MOA Certificate program learners will be prepared to work as Medical Office Assistants with expertise and skill sets for the front desk of a medical office in a hospital setting or private practice management. Learners will be taught the essential aspects of greeting and assisting patients, preparing them for their medical office visits, scheduling appointments, billing insurance companies, and collecting payments. Additional topics covered include medical ethics and communication skills, medical record keeping, and managing a medical office. Upon completion of this MOA Certificate program, learners will know best practices and ethical approaches to collaborate with patients and guide them through their medical office experience.
Upon successful completion of the MOA Certificate program, learners should be able to demonstrate proficiency in:
- Communicating effectively with patients and other members of the healthcare delivery system.
- Demonstrating ethical and moral behavior.
- Managing electronic medical records and scheduling systems.
- Performing medical office procedures proficiently and efficiently including medical coding and insurance billing.
- Managing banking, collections, and medical office systems.
