Q: Are there any requirements to enroll?
A: Yes. You must be at least 18-years old to register.

Q:What TOEFL test does this class prepare me for?
A: Our TOEFL preparation class focuses on skill-building for success on the internet-based test – the TOEFL iBT. This is the form of the TOEFL test given around the world since 2011.

Q: Why should I take test prep with UM?
A: The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is the most popular examination for measuring American English proficiency. It is necessary to get a good TOEFL score to enter a North American college or university. Our excellent instructors focus on your areas of weakness, in order to improve your abilities on the test. Our TOEFL preparation class focuses on the skills needed for success on the TOEFL iBT. As a top-ranking university in the U.S., we know what is needed to succeed on the TOEFL test and in university classes.

Q: How long is the class?
A: Classes meet for six Saturdays on the University of Miami Coral Gables campus, for 4 hours each Saturday. There is a total of 24 hours of test preparation instruction.

Q: What will I learn?
A: You will learn how to approach the 4 components of the TOEFL exam – reading, writing, listening, and speaking. You will learn test-taking tips and strategies, English grammar, vocabulary, and writing skills. You will do lots of TOEFL writing and speaking practice which will be corrected by your teacher to help you improve.

Q: Are there any prerequisites?
A: Your English should be at a HIGH-INTERMEDIATE or ADVANCED level of proficiency for this class. If you are not at this level of proficiency in English, you should continue to study English in other ESL courses before taking a test prep course.

Q:Will I have homework?
A: Yes! You will receive homework each week.

Q: Do you guarantee high scores on the TOEFL test?
A: Improving your score on the TOEFL test depends on many factors, including your general language skills in reading, writing, speaking, listening, and grammar. Yes, although grammar is not a separate part of the test, it is included across all areas. The amount of time you spend outside of class on test preparation exercises also is an important factor for TOEFL iBT success.

Q: Can I take the TOEFL exam at UM?
A: Our TOEFL preparation classes include several opportunities to practice the TOEFL exam. You cannot take the TOEFL iBT at the University of Miami. The only places you can take the TOEFL iBT are ETS testing centers. As a student in the TOEFL Preparation class, we guide you to register for the TOEFL iBT at a testing center.
